How Your Allergies Can Affect Your Hearing:
Allergiescan affect your hearing when, immune system responds to allergens by producing
antibodies that release histamine. Allergies can cause a variety of
problems in your ears like:
· Itching
·
Swelling
·
Fullness
·
Dizziness or balance
issues
Conductive Hearing Loss:-
This
hearing loss affects the passage of sound between the ear drum and the inner
ear. Sound passes down the ear canal to the ear drum and through the
middle ear, where the sound is transmitted across the middle ear by the three
bones called the ossicles to the inner ear.
Conductive hearing loss occurs when
sound waves are not able to travel through the outer ear due to a
blockage.
Causes of Conductive Hearing Loss:
1
Wax (cerumen):- Increase
of wax in the outer ear may stop sound from reaching the ear drum.
2
Infection:- Infection and inflammation in the outer ear
(otitis externa) or middle ear (otitis media).
3
Glue ear (otitis media with
effusion) :- Inflammation
in the middle ear with associated fluid filling the middle ear space around the
ossicles. The fluid stops the ossicles and ear drum from moving effectively and
stops sound from passing easily through to the inner ear.
4
Ear surgery :- May
damage the ear drum or small bones in the middle ear stopping sound from
passing easily through to the inner ear.
Ear symptoms related to allergies
- Chronic itching of the outer ear canal
- Frequent outer ear infections
- Feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
- Frequent infections of the middle ear
- Dizziness
- Tinnitus (noises in the head)
Ear has three major sections, all of which can be affected by allergies:
Outer Ear: Allergic
skin reactions can cause itching and swelling of both the outer ear and ear
canal.
Middle Ear: This
is where fluid buildup can happen, causing earaches or ear pressure. When
swelling stops your middle ear from draining, it gives your ear a full feeling.
Also being uncomfortable, it can also cause balance issues.
Inner Ear: Hearing can be temporarily impaired in individuals with inner-ear
disorders like Ménière’s disease. This can also cause vertigo , tinnitus, a
ringing in the ears.
